The County Tyres story is not unlike that of the acorn turned to a giant oak, as life seems to have been one big expansion programme since Arthur Peters and his wife founded County Tyre Service (Bristol) back in 1937.
In the early days Arthur made deliveries on a bicycle as he sowed the seeds for a thriving company, having initially entered the tyre industry three years earlier when he formed, together with a partner, Bristol Tyre Service.
The company operated from basic premises in Redcliffe Street, Bristol, and in 1942 the business became a limited company. At the end of the war a programme of steady expansion commenced with a second depot opening in Wales, followed by four further new depots in the West Country.
At this time, by holding extensive stocks at all the depots, the company were in the favourable position of supplying tyres of almost any make directly off the shelf, ranging from a scooter tyre to earth-moving trucks.
In the 1960's the company acquired further business in Bournemouth and Southampton. The next significant expansion took place in 1965, when County Tyres progressed into the international market. Then, four years later, the company purchased Vulcan Marine, which took the business into the field of inflatable dinghies. In the mid- 1970's it was decided to build a new head office in Victoria Road, St.Philips, Bristol, which remains today the nerve centre of the County Tyre Group operation.
During the last two decades County
Tyre Group has continued to extend its services and facilities in keeping
with ever- changing demands from the industry.
